If there was any couple that embodied the notion of star-crossed lovers, surely, we thought, it must be The Young and the Restless‘ Adam and Sally. Genoa City’s black sheep found love together against all odds. What started out as a bit of a lark to drive everyone around them crazy, soon blossomed into a deep connection. They tried keeping things professional, but it seemed the more folks warned them to stay apart, the more they wanted each other.
And once they finally gave into passion, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Lust gave way to love and that grew so great that Adam ended things with Sally. He wanted her happiness, and that meant distancing himself so she could keep her job at Newman.
Then came Nick, the pregnancy, the baby and the blame. Adam chose to save Sally’s life over the baby’s during a health crisis and she couldn’t forgive him… until she did. Sally and Nick fell apart and she and Adam reunited — which surely meant a return to their heyday of passion and plotting, taking over Newman together and growing into the ultimate Genoa City power couple!
It’s been months since then, though, and in all that time “Ally” have barely inched forward at all. Adam’s preoccupied with getting Connor help, which we totally get from a parental standpoint. But from a story standpoint, he and Sally have fallen kind of flat. Their corporate scheming’s been reduced to convinced Victor to ride in and buy up Sally’s company.
The two don’t always have to be the outsiders sticking it to everyone else and swiping companies out from under them, but surely they could find a way to put their heads together and build their own fortunes. Courtney Hope certainly loves “Ally” together, but has a suggestion that they both get out of their own ways and stop with the self-sabotage. And like it or not, going up against the Newmans has never worked out for them or anyone else.
And as for the love? Back in February Michael Grossman seemed awfully bullish on the idea of a Sally and Adam wedding. Sure, it did seem a bit early in their reunion, but we’re over two months out from that and there’s been nothing.
The slow burn is all well and good when folks are falling in love, or trying to find their way back to each other. Both of those smoldered into the white-hot pairing that is Adam and Sally. Or we should say was. Because just as they were about to burst into flame, they went right back to smoldering. And we’re left waiting for them to burst into flame once again.
