Chris Scrambler’s face ‘went numb’

Chris suddenly felt his face turn numb while working as a greenhorn on The Wizard. His condition went from bad, to worse, to much worse, according to the crew, as he suffered severe dehydration.

He passed out and felt tingly. When asked how many fingers his captain was holding up – which were two – Chris could see four, before his body immediately went into emergency mode.

Scrambler started to fight for survival while going into shock, with his tongue making lots of movement and his hands clenching. The incident has been labelled The Medevac Situation on the show.

Greenhorn airlifted to safety

Captain Keith Colburn rang for the coast guard, who strapped Scrambler to a stretcher. Chris told his boss he is “so sorry,” to which Colburn said, “Don’t be sorry, you did so well for me, buddy.”

Following the incident, Chris explained how he experienced a “total body shutdown” and felt “really close to having a heart attack.” His heart rate was “really, really high” at the time.

Colburn was speechless, but managed to say, “At one point, his blood vials were 180 and his blood pressure was continuing to drop. That’s the number one signal the body is getting ready to shut down.”

He recovered well after incident

Chris appeared on Discovery’s After The Catch in 2013 after recovering well from the incident. His boss, Colburn, explained how the greenhorn was “getting ready to check out.”

The captain said how Chris had walked off-deck before the incident. But by the time Colburn got down to the room he was in, the greenhorn was already lying on his back, and it “happened so quickly”.

Scrambler “couldn’t really muster up” the words to say he’s seeing double, before they carried him halfway down to the hallway. “Everything was just fuzzy, I don’t really remember much,” he said.
