It feels like Johnny and Chanel have gotten nothing but bad news on Days of Our Lives lately, but today, finally, that turned around… A bit. We don’t know if finding out why Chanel miscarried is necessarily a happy moment, but at least it laid to rest the possibility that it was Paulina’s fault. Now, mom and daughter can lean on each other for support. (Read about the emotional revelation in our recap here.)
At the same time, Johnny was replaced on the film he was supposed to move to Los Angeles to work on, so while that wasn’t great, there’s still a silver lining: He and Chanel aren’t leaving Salem! For a few weeks, Days of Our Lives did its best to convince us that Johnny and Chanel would be leaving for California so he could finally break into showbiz. But that was never really in doubt for their portrayers!
As Carson Boatman told Soap Opera Digest, he and Raven Bowens were reassured from the start that they weren’t going anywhere. “They were gracious enough to come down on set and let Raven and me know, ‘Hey, you’re going to see that you’re moving to L.A., but you’re not. It’s just part of a story.’”
That’s good to know, but if that’s the case, then it seems that the point of this story was, rather than ship Johnny and Chanel off, to position them to start the next chapter of their lives. And it’s tough to believe that finding out they were staying in Salem the same day Abe and Kate decide to start their own soap opera was a coincidence! Because if that soap is filming in Salem (wait, is there a TV studio in town to handle that kind of production?), they’re going to need a director.
Cue, Johnny, who’s been flitting around aimlessly for, well, years now. He’s really had nothing since his devil documentary went bust and that was back in 2022. Granted, when you’re a part of the DiMera family, you don’t really need to work, but it’s not doing Johnny any favors as a character when he stays mostly out of his family drama and has no story outside of his brand new marriage and tragic baby loss.
This new soap then, is perfect. He’s going to need a job to replace the one he lost and, probably, a distraction from the loss of his child. And just like that, Days of Our Lives is finally set to fix its Johnny problem, giving him a job, a direction and a reason to mix up with all manner of folks as he works with Kate and Abe on their new soap opera.
What are your thoughts? Is Johnny about to get a crash course in daytime TV? Is he finally going to get something to do and a storyline of his own?
