Well, it’s finally answer time on General Hospital as Cyrus’ attempt to take Liz out resulted in a full confession and explanation session in the show’s January 19 episode. Like any good villain, rather than simply stick Elizabeth with the needle and get her out of the way, Cyrus couldn’t resist monologuing and telling her who all he killed and why! The long and the short of it: In Cyrus’ twisted mind, he’s been doing God’s will.
It started, he said, with him going around killing people “trapped” by machines and being denied a reunion with God. Lulu was one of those people, so he gave her the meds that caused her liver to fail. Then, when that didn’t work, he took her off life support. She was in a coma with no hope, so he wanted to “free” her. It was all perfectly benevolent of him!
At least, that’s his demented story.
Sam, Cyrus then told Liz, had to die for interfering with the Lord’s will. It was the price she paid for thwarting God (and Cyrus, of course). Fun fact, though: Sam was the first patient to die from digitalis. The others at Turning Woods died from different means, but once Cyrus discovered how quick and painless digitalis was, he figured that was the Lord’s chosen drug.
Admittedly, though, Cyrus used the wrong meds with Lulu, which just drew folks’ attention to her and resulted in the cascade of actions that saved her and killed Sam. As far as Cyrus is concerned, he’s the Angel of Mercy… or Death. Take your pick. He’s just doing God’s work.
As for Dex? Like Sam, he got in the way of Cyrus’ soul-freeing mission. It was all very much aboveboard in the holiness department, he assured Liz — and she agreed! Clearly, she told the utterly unbalanced man, he was just doing another type of healing. That attempt to stall and disarm Cyrus with charm didn’t work, though, and it was left to Lucky to jump in and save Liz at the last minute.
Unfortunately, that just led to him being stabbed with the syringe as Cyrus may have just claimed his next victim! But now, at least, we know why he killed Sam. It’s utterly insane and completely out of touch with reality, but it’s an answer. That, though, offers cold comfort to Kelly Monaco and Sam fans, and we’re sure it will just hurt all the more for Sam’s family to find out what happened and why.
She was, quite literally, murdered for doing something kind and selfless for another person. At the end of the day, that may be just about as horrible as it gets. But with that preview from the beginning of the week of gunshots going off, we have a feeling Cyrus may soon fall prey to the real Angel of Death… courtesy of whomever gets to him first.
