General Hospital’s Maurice Benard Cops to His Misapprehensions About a ‘Delightful’ Castmate Who Plays ‘Evil and Distasteful’ All Too Well

As many stars will attest to, the actions of their characters often spill over into their personal lives, via fan reaction, and though that’s who they impersonate in the reel world, that’s not who they are in the real world. Well, it’s not only the fans who often take actors and actresses to task for the actions of those they play… A General Hospital star admitted how hard it was to separate one Port Charles character from the actor who plays him.

Carlo Rota recently turned up on Maurice Benard’s (Sonny) State of Mind and after the episode was released, the latter stated via an Instagram story, “I’m really glad that Carlo Rota that plays Sidwell on GH is on State of Mind.” Benard went on to admit, “His character is so evil and distasteful I had trouble separating the person from the character.”

Having never seen Rota in anything other than the “evil and distasteful” character he plays in Port Charles, he continued, “He’s a delightful fellow, so now I can remind myself Carlo is a nice person in real life, just playing a terrible character on GH.” Benard then acknowledged what many have often had trouble with and added, “It can be weird that sometimes humans can lump an actor in the same box as a character they play.”
